It doesn't matter which RGB space you use as default, as long as its corresponding ICC Profile is embedded in the image file.

You should also perform some form of calibration on your monitor: ideally with an instrument, but excellent results can be achieved with the Adobe Gamma tool, supplied with Photoshop (top image).

If all else fails, when you have your image just the way you want it, make a copy and convert it to CIELab (Image > Mode > Lab color in Photoshop).
